Best free AI setup right now

For students, side-project devs, early-stage founders watching cost. · Updated May 1, 2026

You can do serious work with AI without paying anyone. The tradeoffs are real (rate limits, slower model tiers) but the floor is high enough for most personal projects. Here's what we'd run.

  1. #1

    Claude (free tier)

The best free chat model for code and writing, hands down.

Anthropic's free Claude tier still gives access to Sonnet 4.6 with reasonable daily limits. Quality is competitive with paid tiers of older models. For most use cases this is your daily driver.

  2. #2

    Gemini (free)

Free 2.5 Pro access with generous limits — currently underrated.

Google's free Gemini tier includes 2.5 Pro with limits that most users never hit. Strong on multimodal (PDFs, images, audio). Use it as your secondary model for tasks Claude struggles with.

  3. #3

    Cline + free API credits

A coding agent for the cost of API credits — often free first month.

Cline pairs with whatever API key you have. Most providers offer free initial credits ($5-10 worth). For occasional coding agent use without committing to Cursor or Claude Code subscriptions, this is the path.

Once free credits run out, expect $10-30/month at moderate use.
