Build-more, verify-more

Also known as: verify-as-you-build, AI velocity tax

A practical principle for AI-assisted work: as builds get faster with AI, verification has to scale with them — otherwise quality degrades silently.

What it means

The shorthand captures a real shift in how AI-assisted work goes wrong. AI lets you build faster than ever — generate code, draft documents, ship features in fractions of the previous time. But the cognitive load of *checking* that work hasn't gotten any cheaper. Reviewing a 500-line diff is still 500 lines of attention. If you build 5x more without scaling verification, error rates rise 5x in the wild. The principle: for every X% increase in build velocity, you need a comparable increase in verification capacity. That can be model verification (have another model check), CI checks (more automated tests, more linters), human review (still important on the parts that matter), or all three. This isn't anti-AI. It's the opposite — it's how to actually capture the velocity gains AI offers without paying them back later in production bugs, hallucinated docs, and confidently-wrong reports. Teams that go fast with AI and don't scale verification end up with technical debt that compounds invisibly until something breaks.

Example

You used to ship 1 PR per day. With Claude Code you now ship 5. If your code review process was a manual 30-min read of one diff, it now needs to be: automated tests on every PR, a verifier model run pre-merge, and human review on anything touching auth/payments/data integrity. Otherwise the bug rate quietly doubles.

Why it matters

The narrative around AI is mostly about velocity. The lived experience of teams that have gone all-in on AI is that velocity is real — and so is the new failure mode of bugs that slip through because nothing was checking. Internalizing build-more-verify-more is what separates teams that ship faster from teams that ship faster AND stay reliable.
