ChatGPT vs Claude vs Gemini

The three frontier chat AIs each pull in a different direction. ChatGPT has the broadest ecosystem, Claude has the cleanest writing voice and best coding, Gemini has the deepest Google integration and the most generous free tier. None is a strict superset of the others.

TL;DR

ChatGPT for ecosystem, Claude for writing and code, Gemini if you live in Google Workspace or need video understanding.

The tools at a glance

ChatGPT

by OpenAI

Most popular general-purpose chat AI, with the biggest ecosystem of integrated tools.

Best for
General assistant work, image generation, broad ecosystem use.
Standout
GPTs, Canvas, native image gen, web browsing, and Operator all built in.
Weakness
Default writing voice is more corporate; reasoning model rate-limited on Plus.
Pricing
Free; Plus $20/mo; Pro $200/mo; Team $25/seat; Enterprise custom

Claude

by Anthropic

Frontier chat AI known for writing quality, careful reasoning, and Claude Code.

Best for
Writing, code, long-document analysis, careful reasoning.
Standout
Claude Code (terminal-native dev workflow), 200k+ context, strong writing voice.
Weakness
No native image generation; smaller third-party ecosystem.
Pricing
Free; Pro $20/mo; Max $100–200/mo; Team $30/seat; Enterprise custom

Gemini

by Google

Google's chat AI, deeply wired into Workspace, YouTube, and Android.

Best for
Google Workspace users, video/multimodal work, generous free use.
Standout
Deep Workspace integration, native video understanding, 1M+ context on Advanced.
Weakness
Writing voice is bland; ecosystem outside Google is thin.
Pricing
Free (very generous); Advanced $20/mo; Ultra $200/mo; Workspace add-on per seat

Key differences

Writing voice

Claude wins decisively. Gemini's prose is the most generic of the three — competent but flat. ChatGPT sits in the middle with corporate hedging. For anything you'll publish, draft in Claude.

Coding

Claude is ahead today thanks to Claude Code (terminal-native dev CLI). ChatGPT is close on raw code quality. Gemini lags on agentic coding workflows even though Gemini Code Assist is decent in IDEs.

Multimodal

Gemini wins on video — it natively ingests video files and YouTube URLs. ChatGPT wins on image generation (DALL-E built in). Claude is the weakest on multimodal: image input only, no video, no native image gen.

Free tier

Gemini's free tier is the most generous — the strong model is available with high limits. ChatGPT free gates GPT-5 reasoning hard. Claude free is the most restrictive of the three.

Ecosystem

ChatGPT wins on third-party ecosystem (GPTs marketplace, Operator, Canvas). Gemini wins inside Google Workspace (Docs, Gmail, Sheets sidebar). Claude has the smallest ecosystem but the best primitives (Projects, Skills, Claude Code).

Context window

Gemini Advanced ships 1M tokens by default. Claude is 200k (1M on enterprise). ChatGPT tops out at 256k on Enterprise. For massive document or codebase ingest, Gemini wins on raw size.

Pick by use case

Long-form writing and editing

Claude

Claude's voice needs the least cleanup. ChatGPT is workable; Gemini reads as the most AI-flavored.

Coding in a real repo

Claude

Claude Code is the strongest agentic dev CLI. ChatGPT and Gemini both have CLIs but neither matches the workflow.

Summarizing or querying YouTube videos

Gemini

Gemini ingests YouTube URLs natively. The other two require workarounds (transcripts, downloads).

Drafting in Google Docs / replying in Gmail

Gemini

Gemini lives in the Workspace sidebar. The others are tab-switches at best.

Image generation from a chat

ChatGPT

DALL-E in ChatGPT is the most refined chat-driven image flow. Gemini's Imagen is solid but less iterative; Claude has none.

Building shareable custom assistants

ChatGPT

GPTs have a real marketplace and the largest user base. Gems and Claude Projects are usable but quieter ecosystems.

Heavy free-tier use

Gemini

Gemini gives the most strong-model access for $0. ChatGPT and Claude both gate reasoning models tightly on free.

Pricing notes

All three start at $20/mo for the standard paid tier and $200/mo for the heaviest tier. Gemini Advanced often comes free with Google One AI Premium and Pixel/Workspace bundles, which can make it effectively free for users already in those products. For pure value, Gemini wins on price; for workflow fit, pricing is rarely the deciding factor.
