Claude vs Gemini

Claude and Gemini optimize for different users. Claude is built for people who write and code for a living. Gemini is built for people who live in Google Workspace and want video, image, and a generous free tier in one place.

TL;DR

Claude for writing, code, and careful reasoning. Gemini for Workspace integration, video, and free-tier value.

Key differences

Writing voice

Claude wins clearly. Gemini's prose is the blandest of the major chat AIs — accurate but flavorless. If you publish what you write, Claude saves real editing time.

Coding

Claude wins. Claude Code is the strongest terminal-native dev CLI today. Gemini Code Assist is fine in IDEs but lags on agentic, multi-file work.

Multimodal

Gemini wins. It accepts video files and YouTube URLs natively. Claude takes images but no video, and has no image generation. For multimodal work Gemini is the obvious pick.

Workspace integration

Gemini lives inside Google Docs, Gmail, Sheets, and Drive. Claude has connectors but nothing as native. If your day is in Workspace, Gemini wins on context alone.

Free tier

Gemini's free tier gives access to a strong model with high limits, often bundled with Google One. Claude free is the most restrictive of the major chat AIs.

Context window

Gemini Advanced is 1M tokens by default. Claude is 200k (1M on enterprise). For one-shot ingestion of a huge codebase or document set, Gemini wins on raw size.

Pick by use case

Long-form writing

Claude

Claude's voice is the least edited-feeling. Gemini reads generic.

Coding in a real repo

Claude

Claude Code outpaces Gemini for terminal-native, agentic dev work.

Querying long YouTube videos

Gemini

Native YouTube ingest. Claude has no video path at all.

Drafting in Docs / triaging Gmail

Gemini

Workspace sidebar with full document context. Claude is a tab away.

Reasoning through ambiguous problems

Claude

Claude's extended thinking is more careful and less prone to confident wrong answers.

Heavy free-tier use

Gemini

Strong model on free with high limits. Claude free is the most gated.

Ingesting a 500k-token codebase in one shot

Gemini

1M context on Advanced beats Claude Pro for raw single-prompt size.

Pricing notes

Both list at $20/mo for entry paid and $200/mo at the top. Gemini Advanced often comes bundled with Google One AI Premium, making it effectively free for users already paying for Google storage. Claude has no equivalent bundle. If you already pay Google, Gemini's effective price is lower; for new users it's roughly the same.
