Most designers tried Midjourney once, got something cool, couldn't reproduce it, and quietly went back to Figma. The problem isn't that you don't have the eye for it. The problem is that image generators reward patience and a real workflow, not single prompts. One-shot prompting is the slot machine version of this craft. The actual job is closer to art direction, where you set the constraints, run iterations, and edit toward a target.

Mood boards and exploration
This is where AI is most obviously useful and least controversial. You're not shipping the output, you're feeding your brain.
Midjourney is still the strongest tool for aesthetic-driven imagery, the kind of moody, weird, characterful frames you'd pin to a board for a pitch. Krea is the better pick when you want to sketch and prompt at the same time, watch your inputs morph in real time, and follow a thread without breaking flow. Use Midjourney when you want a finished feeling reference. Use Krea when you want to think out loud with your hands.

Brand-consistent assets at scale
This is the workflow that turns AI from a toy into a line item.
Recraft is the answer to "make 30 social cards that look like they're from the same designer." Its style transfer to brand feature lets you lock a visual system once, then generate inside that system as many times as you need. Adobe Firefly is the right pick when commercial safety and brand kits matter, because it's trained on licensed content and respects color palettes you've already loaded. Canva covers the templated everything case, the pages, decks, and post variants where the constraints already exist and you just need to fill the boxes.

Posters and assets with text
The "make a poster with the words X" problem is solved, just not by Midjourney. Ideogram beats it at typography by a wide margin. If your asset has a slogan, a date, a name, or any readable text on it at all, start in Ideogram and stop fighting Midjourney's gibberish letters.
UI mockups and component generation

Describe a screen, get a clean Figma-ready frame to riff on. v0 is the one that crosses the line from mockup into actual React and Tailwind components, useful when you're a designer who ships to dev and you want to hand over something that compiles. Figma's own AI features are catching up for in-tool work, especially for naming layers, drafting copy in place, and generating component variants without leaving the file.

A real workflow: six brand-consistent social cards
Say a client needs six Instagram posts that feel like one campaign. Here's how the day goes.
Open Recraft. Upload three of their existing best-on-brand assets and create a style. Generate two or three test images inside that locked style to confirm it holds. Now write your six prompts with the actual content you need, headline copy, subject matter, layout intent, and run each through the locked style. Pull the strongest two or three outputs per prompt. Drop them into Figma or Canva, layer in the typography (Ideogram if you need text rendered into the image, Figma if you're overlaying), align the safe areas, and export.
Total time from blank canvas to six approved assets: a morning, not a week. The style lock is what makes them feel like a set.
The taste problem
AI averages everything to a beige middle unless you bring the constraints. The few-shot pattern works for image generation the same way it works for writing. Paste three of your best past designs as references, ask for the next one in the same style, and you get something inside your world instead of inside the model's average. Two strong examples beat a paragraph of adjectives. "Editorial, warm, slightly faded" tells the model nothing. Three of your actual posters tell it everything.
Keep a folder of your best six to eight pieces. Reuse it on every prompt.
Where AI is still bad
Hands. Complex composition. Anything where the model has to track multiple spatial relationships at once. Exact brand colors without explicit hex codes (and even then, expect drift). Anything that requires having an opinion about what should exist in the world. The thesis, the weird specific point of view, the reason this campaign matters and not the other one, that's still you.
Treat the model as a fast intern with no judgment. You're the art director.
