Perplexity

By Perplexity AI

A search-grounded answer engine that cites sources for every claim, useful when you need verifiable information.

Overview

Perplexity is the answer engine that won the "AI search" category by being relentlessly research-first. Instead of generating an answer from model memory and hoping it's right, Perplexity searches the web in real time, reads sources, and generates a cited answer — every claim is footnoted to a URL you can click. For research-heavy work, that's the right loop, and it's why Perplexity has retained the strongest standalone-search-product position against ChatGPT, Gemini, and Google's AI Mode. The product has expanded well beyond a single-search-box: Spaces (project-scoped chats with custom sources), Focus modes (Academic, YouTube, Reddit, Social), Pages (publishable research artifacts), Comet (their AI browser launched in 2025), and a Pro Search mode that runs multi-step research. The free tier gives 5 Pro searches per day, which is enough to evaluate but quickly limiting. The honest tradeoff: Perplexity is the best research tool in this space, but it's not a general-purpose chatbot. Coding, long-form writing, image generation, and agentic tasks are weaker than ChatGPT/Claude. Use it for "answer a question with sources," not for "be my AI assistant."

Best for

  • research with citations
  • current events
  • fact-checking
  • competitive intelligence

Strengths

  • Citations on every claim — you can actually verify the answer
  • Pro Search runs multi-step research workflows automatically
  • Spaces let you scope a project to specific sources or files
  • Focus modes (Academic, Reddit, YouTube) target the right corner of the web for the question
  • Comet browser brings Perplexity into your daily browsing workflow

Weaknesses

  • Weaker than ChatGPT/Claude for general writing, coding, and creative work
  • Free tier (5 Pro searches/day) is restrictive once you start to rely on it
  • Citations are mostly accurate but occasionally hallucinated (always click through)
  • Not the best fit for agentic / tool-use workflows

Pricing

Free

Use cases

  • Market and competitive research

Faster than reading 10 SEO articles. Cited summaries you can verify, with focus modes for academic vs. social signal.

  • Due diligence and investor research

Pro Search digs into recent news, filings, and industry sources — and shows where each claim came from.

  • Scientific literature scanning

Academic focus mode pulls from papers and review literature. Pair with Elicit for deeper systematic review.

  • Fact-checking and debunking

Citations let you trace claims to primary sources, which is exactly the workflow ChatGPT struggles with.

  • News and current events

Real-time web search means answers reflect what happened today, not the model knowledge cutoff.

  • Project-scoped research with Spaces

Upload your sources, scope the assistant to them, and ask questions across an entire research dossier.

  • Replacing the "how do I…" Google search

A cited answer in 5 seconds beats clicking through 4 SEO blog posts. The everyday workhorse.

When not to use

  • You want a general-purpose chat assistant — ChatGPT or Claude is broader
  • You need long-form creative writing — Claude is sharper
  • You need a coding companion — Cursor or Claude Code
  • You care most about Google-quality web ranking, not synthesis — use Google AI Mode
